Australia welcomes the global tax community this week as Melbourne hosts the 78th International Fiscal Association (IFA) Congress, taking place from 18 to 22 October 2026. It is the first time the Congress has come to the city, and its first return to Australia since Sydney in 2003.

With more than 185 years of history in Australia, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, the Australian Member of Taxand, is the leading independent law firm in Australia. Today it has more than 1,500 people across offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and advises on significant transactions, projects and disputes for clients in Australia and internationally.

Our colleagues at Corrs lead a national 40-strong Tax and Tax Controversy team, providing a full-service offering across all Australian direct and indirect taxes. The team acts for leading global organisations, large Australian companies and government entities, with an emphasis on transactional work including M&A, cross-border investment, private equity, funds, major projects and infrastructure, capital markets, real estate and corporate restructures.

Corrs supports clients from tax due diligence and structuring through to documentation and post-merger implementation, and has a dedicated practice advising on Tax controversy matters including audits, inquiries, settlements and litigation with revenue authorities. Their experience also gives them a voice in Australian tax policy, through representation on industry bodies and in government consultations.

As our Australian member firm, Corrs works alongside colleagues across the Taxand network on global mandates, delivering co-ordinated advice to multinational clients.

Rhys Jewell, Partner, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Member of Taxand Global, comments:

“Australia’s tax landscape is evolving at a rapid pace, with heightened scrutiny from revenue authorities and growing complexity in cross-border investment and transactions. Our team combines a deep knowledge of Australia’s tax regime with international best practice to deliver practical, commercial outcomes for our clients.”

Rhys adds: “Hosting the IFA Congress is an important moment for Australia’s tax community, and for Melbourne in particular. It brings tax experts from around the world to our doorstep and highlights Australia’s role in the international tax dialogue. As the leading independent law firm in Australia with a long history in this city, we are proud to be part of this event, and we look forward to welcoming colleagues from Taxand member firms around the world next week.”
