Taxand launches new Guide on the tax issues affecting sportspeople in key worldwide jurisdictions
30 Jul 2008

We are delighted to announce the launch of a new Guide which compiles local Taxand knowledge across 15 key jurisdictions worldwide to give people operating in the sports sector informed insight into the key tax areas requiring consideration.

In a world where it is increasingly common for sportspersons to change team and country of residence, the decision on what offer to accept is no longer only down to questions of a sporting nature. The variation in tax rates applying to the same gross package can make one country, and thus one team, a far more attractive prospect than another.

The Guide, which has been coordinated by Felix Plaza Romero of Garrigues, Taxand's member firm in Spain and published by Thomson Aranzadi, delivers a brief description of the tax issues that will affect a sportsperson who is relocating to the most popular 15 jurisdictions. Designed as a source of reference for initial consultation, the Guide provides a framework outlining the key personal tax issues for exploration by advisors and sportspeoples' representatives alike. The rules on inbound expatriates, the tax treatment of image rights, the exploitation of such rights through corporate vehicles, the tax treatment of non-residents and the concept of 'residence', are among the topics covered.

The internationalisation of sports has created a growing need for independent cross-border tax advice. Our Taxand Sports & Entertainment Team combines leading tax advisors from our global network working together to help our clients address the tax issues affecting the sector.
