Stephen Machin

Stephen is based in Taxand UK where he is a partner at Alvarez & Marsal Taxand. Stephen has a career that spans over 30 years advising several of the leading UK tax cases of the past few years.  Prior to joining A&M Taxand, Stephen spent 12 years as a partner at KPMG in London (including as Head of its Corporate Tax Practice and its Power and Utilities sector and latterly as a member of the KPMG UK Board), 12 years as a partner in the law firm Ashurst Morris Crisp (now Ashurst) (including as Head of its Tax Department and member of its Management Committee) and 5 years at law firm Freshfields. Stephen also advised the Conservative Party on corporate tax matters, was a Commissioner on the influential Forsyth Tax Reform Commission appointed by George Osborne in 2005 and was one of a small number of senior advisors advising the Party in the lead up to the 2010 General Election.

Stephen’s primary areas of expertise are mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganisations - domestic and international - and private equity and many years of experience in the power and utilities area, particularly in relation to electricity generation, transmission and distribution. He has acted for a number of high profile clients such as GE, Nissan, National Grid, Exxon Mobil, Advent, HSBC and Imperial Tobacco.  He also acted on the first major UK PFI projects and the first significant unbundlings in post-apartheid South Africa.

Stephen gained a first class honours degree in law from Cambridge University, a post-graduate law degree also from Cambridge, is a qualified solicitor (having passed in the top ten in the country in his final examinations) and is a Chartered Tax Advisor. He also speaks German and, to a lesser extent, Afrikaans. Apart from his family, Stephen’s interests away from work including riding, running, endurance cycling, ballet, opera, military history, watching rugby and cricket and visiting South Africa.
