Bernard is based in Taxand South Africa where he is an executive for ENS (Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs). Bernard has 17 years experience and specialises in international tax, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, project finance, structured finance and capital markets. Bernard also extensively advises on exchange control implications of international transactions and on tax dispute resolutions. Bernard’s general practice experience includes advising on global projects. He has led the tax advice on a substantial number of the largest, most recent corporate listings in South Africa. Other projects which Bernard has advised on include structuring of international transactions and groups, group restructurings with or without listings, infrastructure projects, international toll roads and airports, submarine telecommunications cables, oil refineries and construction projects. These projects span numerous industries, including telecommunication and e-commerce, logistics, finance, mining, construction, and energy.
Bernard jointly leads the tax department. The International Comparative Legal Guide selected Bernard to contribute the South Africa chapter for the International Comparative Guide to Corporate Tax for 2009, and he co-authored the South African Country Chapter in the World Tax Guide 2010.
Bernard is recognised as a leading lawyer by Legal 500 2010 – Tax (South Africa); Tax Directors Handbook 2011 – Top 250 Tax Advisors in the World; Best Lawyers South Africa 2011 – Tax.
Bernard’s qualifications include a BCom (Accounting) (Hons) (CTA), MCom (Taxation) from the University of Pretoria, Leadership in Professional Service Firms course at Harvard Business School, USA, and CA (SA) from the University of Pretoria.
