Mark Kirkey is based in Taxand Canada where he is a partner and senior director of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP. He is also a Certified General Accountant and senior member of the Gowlings transfer pricing and competent authority team. Working with the firm's national tax practice group, Mark helps organisations optimise their global tax position and reduce exposure to unfavourable audit assessments through proper tax planning and implementation strategies. Prior to joining Canada’s Taxand practice, Gowling Lafleur Henderson, Mark was a senior analyst for the Canada Revenue Agency's International Tax Directorate. During his tenure with the CRA, he worked on more than 100 competent authority cases and numerous advanced pricing agreements. Between 1999 and 2001, Mark served as a senior tax advisor, responding to complex technical questions from the CRA's field offices across Canada. He also served as the CRA headquarters audit member on the National Fairness Committee, and held a variety of other positions—including that of special investigator and appeals technical advisor. Mark was recognised in 2004 with an award for his role in developing a strategy to improve the working relationship between the CRA's Competent Authority and international field auditors, a project that resulted in new policy implementation within Competent Authority.
