Daniel Hayhurst

Daniel Hayhurst is based in Taxand Canada where he is a partner of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP. He is a member of the firm’s tax group and head of its pension department. Daniel specialises in pension and other registered and non-registered plans. He has advised a broad range of clients including governments, fiduciaries, plan administrators, employers, trustees, investment/fund managers, actuaries and employee groups. He is experienced in regulatory examinations and investigations, and has provided counsel on pension litigation. Daniel acts for both provincially and federally regulated pension plans in unionised and non-unionised environments. He is executive editor of and frequent contributor to Pensions @ Gowlings, the firm’s client newsletter that deals with pension and other benefit issues. Daniel earned degrees in law at both the University of Cambridge (1986) and Dalhousie University (1987). He was called to the Bar in 1989, and has been an associate and partner of canada’s Taxand practice, Gowling Lafleur Henderson, since that time. He was seconded to the Legal Services Branch of the former Pension Commission of Ontario in 1992–1993 (now the Financial Services Commission of Ontario), and consulted on the drafting of numerous regulations under the Pension Benefits Act (Ontario). Daniel is a member of several industry organisations including the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute, the Association of Canadian Pension Management, the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, and the International Pension & Employee Benefits Lawyers Association.
