Michael Bussmann

Michael Bussmann is based in Taxand Canada where he is a partner of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP. His indirect tax practice includes all forms of federal and provincial commodity taxes in Canada, environmental levies, and customs matters. Michael provides indirect tax planning advice to international and domestic clients with investments and operations across Canada. He advises clients in a wide range of industries such as apparel, banking, energy, financing and leasing, insurance, manufacturing, payments, real estate, telecommunications, traditional and Internet retail, and transportation. Michael manages tax audits and customs verifications, voluntary disclosures and commodity tax dispute resolution. He has appeared before the Canada Revenue Agency, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, and the provincial tax authorities in appeals of assessments for sales and use taxes, GST/HST and administrative monetary penalties, value for duty and anti-dumping matters. Michael is a member of the Sales & Commodity Tax Section of the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, and the Tax Committee of the Canadian Finance & Leasing Association. He received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and German language and literature from the University of Western Ontario, a Master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Ottawa, and his LLB from the University of Toronto.
