Sharon Bennett

Sharon Bennett is based in Taxand Canada where she is a partner of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP. Sharon works out of the Waterloo office and is the office group leader of the Waterloo Region tax department. She specialises in taxation and provides tax advice to clients in the Waterloo and Toronto regions. Sharon advises on the income tax aspects of a wide variety of transactions and arrangements including cross-border transactions, acquisitions, mergers and reorganisations, financing arrangements, stock option and other equity plans, public-private partnerships and executive compensation. She is a member of the Gowlings Technology Group and has extensive experience providing tax advice to e-business and knowledge-based businesses. She also provides GST and other commodity tax advice to non-residents as well as financial- and public-sector bodies. Sharon is a graduate of Concordia University (BA summa cum laude); she received her law degree from York University (Osgoode Hall) and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1985. She engaged in general commercial practice prior to completing the In-Depth Tax Course of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and commencing full-time tax practice in 1988. A member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association and the Tax Section of the Ontario Bar Association, Sharon is also an advocate before the Tax Court of Canada. Sharon has been a speaker at CBA Annual (CLE) Institute tax seminars, a tax lecturer for the Law Society of Upper Canada Bar Admission Course, a workshop leader at the CTF Annual Conference and other continuing legal education conferences, and has been a special lecturer at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law on taxation and e-commerce.
