Juan Alvarado

Johnny Alvarado is based in Taxand Puerto Rico where he is a co-founder and partner of Zaragoza & Alvarado LLP. Prior to establishing the firm, Johnny was a partner of Arthur Andersen LLP's Tax and Business Advisory Services Practice in San Juan. Before joining Andersen in 1998, Johnny worked at the Puerto Rico Treasury Department for five years in the following executive positions: Assistant Secretary for Administrative Appeals, Acting Secretary, and Deputy Secretary.

Before joining Treasury in 1993, Johnny was a tax manager of an international accounting firm in San Juan. As Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Johnny was directly involved in the development and implementation of tax policies for the Government of Puerto Rico, and he was also responsible for all matters related to tax legislation. He was in charge of reviewing and evaluating ruling requests and closing agreements prior to their issuance, including conferences with corporate officers and tax counsel to discuss and define issues.

Johnny has been a speaker at various tax seminars sponsored by different associations. He is a past President of the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants and has held positions as President of various committees, such as Finance and Regulations. From 2000 until 2002, he was Vice President of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce’s Tax Committee, and he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Johnny has a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Puerto Rico, a Master’s Degree in business administration with a major in accounting, and a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration from the University of Puerto Rico. He has been admitted to practice law in Puerto Rico, the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit.
